The Arezzo solar power plant is FS Energy’s third plant to be connected directly to a railway substation (SSE). Commercial operations (COD) began on 19 December 2025 and the subsequent ramp-up activities continued throughout January to test the plant’s operation and gradually bring it to full capacity.
The installed capacity is 4.82 MWp, covering a total area of 70,000 m². The solar farm consists of over 10,000 480 W monocrystalline modules, installed on fixed angled structures. It was configured taking into account local solar irradiation, the area’s topographical conditions, and operational and maintenance requirements, to ensure continuity of production and long-term reliability.
The estimated annual energy production is 5,850 MWh. Direct current is transformed into alternating current by 14 x 330 kW inverters, distributed across the field to optimise photovoltaic strings management and minimise conversion losses.
The plant is connected to the SSE through an 800 meter long 20 kV medium-voltage cable duct. With this solution, the energy generated by the solar farm is fed directly into the railway infrastructure, making it available to power trains and limiting the use of the national electricity grid to system management and balancing operations.
Bespoke engineering solutions were devised for the underground crossing of the Roma-Firenze High-Speed and conventional lines. The project was carried out with the support of FS Group’s technical structures, and with RFI and FS Engineering’s involvement in the design, construction and connection phases.
Building Information Modelling (BIM) was employed during the plant’s design phase. Through this approach, technical information was managed in an integrated way, facilitating coordination between the various structures involved and improving the site’s planning activities.
